Described as a contemporary fable, partly inspired by a children's book by Oscar Wilde, The Selfish Giant is a story about childhood and friendship amid the ugliness of everyday life.
Arbor and Swifty are two teenage boys growing up in a poor and run-down area in northern England, both social outcasts from broken homes. After getting suspended from school for a fight, the two inseparable friends decide to earn some money by collecting scrap metal and selling it to an immoral local scrapyard owner named Kitten, who eventually convinces them to steal it from public works.
Captivating, often funny, and filled with the most naturalistic performances you're likely to see, with scenes that they seem unscripted at times, this piece of British realism is gritty, grimy but also very poignant, especially its heart-breaking conclusion.
Plot summary from IMDb: A contemporary fable about two scrappy 13-year-old working-class friends in the UK who seek fortune by getting involved with a local scrap dealer and criminal, leading to tragic consequences.
Awards: 12 wins & 16 nominations.
