The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Le scaphandre et le papillon) (2007)

Drama, Biography

Director: Julian Schnabel
Writers: Ronald Harwood, Jean-Dominique Bauby
Starring: Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze, Anne Consigny

"Let your imagination set you free."

Based on the memoir of the same name by Jean-Dominique Bauby, who, as the editor of a fashion magazine at the height of success, suffers a sudden stroke that leaves him immobilized by what they call "locked-in syndrome" - he is conscious but paralyzed and unable to communicate with the outside world, only of blinking one of his eyelids. He begins to relive memories, to fantasize, he is visited by his children and their mother, telephoned by his mistress, questioned by his friends, and manages to dictate an entire book before dying.

Director Julian Schnabel (Before Night Falls), being a painter, artfully uses a visual medium, and manages brilliantly to show the world from the perspective of a man trapped in his own body, which he sees as a diving bell, but with his soul free, like a butterfly.
