Drama

Director: Ira Sachs
Writers: Ira Sachs, Mauricio Zacharias
Starring: John Lithgow, Alfred Molina, Tatyana Zbirovskaya, Olya Zueva

"Sometimes staying together... means being apart"

Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) are a elderly gay couple living in Manhattan. When they get married after nearly four decades of living together, news gets out about George's sexuality at his work place and he gets fired from his position as a Catholic school music teacher. Since Ben is an artist who's struggling to make ends meet, the couple can't afford their mortgage any more, and they are driven to live separately, with friends and family members who take them in.

With a brilliantly written script and a great cast that makes really lovable characters, Love is Strange is a timely New York story for any orientation, that beautifully speaks about love, relationships and commitment, the hardships of life in the city, but also about the bigotry that still occurs in the United States.

Plot summary from IMDb: After nearly four decades together, Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and - victims of the relentless New York City real estate market - temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. While George moves in with two cops (Cheyenne Jackson and Manny Perez) who live down stairs, Ben lands in Brooklyn with his nephew (Darren Burrows), his wife (Marisa Tomei), and their temperamental teenage son (Charlie Tahan), with whom Ben shares a bunk bed. While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements.
