The slightly intersecting stories of three women trying to get by in small-town Montana.
Laura (Laura Dern) is an attorney who is dealing with an irritating client, trying to persuade him she can't win his case, Gina (Michelle Williams) is a hard-working wife and mother who is trying to buy sandstone for her new house from an elderly gentleman and acquaintance, and last but not least, Jamie is a lonely ranch girl who becomes infatuated with Beth (Kristen Stewart), a young lawyer who teaches at a night school in her town.
Director Kelly Reichardt (Meek's Cutoff, Wendy and Lucy) adapts the three short stories from Maile Meloy’s 2009 anthology Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It, crafting a quiet and introspective drama that brings us three (four) very realistically depicted female characters, all of them struggling with life and figuring it out, none of them asking for the audience sympathy.
