A proper Western that mixes with comedy and some quality horror.

The film starts out as a fairly traditional Western. A group of four men from a small village form a posse and set out in the wild to rescue one of their missing wives from some mysterious abductors. But when they find them, things turn into something else.

Writer and first-time director S. Craig Zahler crafts an original and entertaining Western that approaches a gory conclusion – fans of horror will surely appreciate the ending – with very well-crafted dialogue, powered by a great cast that makes very likable characters – a bad ass sheriff played by Kurt Russell, an old and daffy deputy played by Richard Jenkins, Patrick Wilson, as the determined husband, and Lost's Mathew Fox, in his most impressive role yet, as an Injun-hating trekker.
