Being John Malkovich (1999)

Comedy, Fantasy

Director: Spike Jonze
Writer: Charlie Kaufman
Starring: John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Ned Bellamy, Eric Weinstein

"Ever wanted to be someone else? Now you can."

Music video director Spike Jonze makes his feature film debut by taking on a script by brilliant young writer Charlie Kaufman and making a one-a-kind film that has well-deservedly gained cult status over the years.

Craig Schwartz (John Cusack) is a lonely pupeteer, who, at his new job on the seven-and-a-halfth floor of an office building, finds a secret portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich, and together with his hot co-worker Maxine (Catherine Keener) and his wife Lotte (Cameron Diaz, uglied up as you've never seen her before), start exploiting it for money.

Combining Kaufman’s creative writing and Jonze’s unique vision, this is most likely a film like none other you've watched before, full of comedic elements and surreal and absurdist humor, with great performances by the cast, and an extra bonus of John Malkovich, who delivers an extraordinary performance portraying himself.

With its proper dose of surrealism and originality, Being John Malkocvich is considered by many critics, as one of the best films of the 1990s.
