Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) plays a chillingly convincing real-estate shark, opposite a down-on-his-luck homeowner Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man), in a gut-twisting drama set during the 2010 real-estate crisis, in Orlando, Florida.
Dennis Nash (Garfield) is a hardworking construction worker who ends up losing his family's house after running into financial troubles. The sheriff's department, led by Rick Carver (Shannon), a real-estate agent specialized in foreclosing houses that are repossessed by the bank, shows up at his door to evict him and, in an uncomfortable scene of mounting panic, his family unceremoniously ends up on the street. Desperate to get his house back, in a job market that hasn't got much to offer, Dennis ends up working for Rick, who offers to teach him the legal (and illegal) ins-and-outs of the foreclosure game.
Described by many as a Wall Street set in the Florida real-estate market, 99 Homes is a gripping and challenging cautionary drama that gets the blood boiling, giving its viewer a chilling glimpse of American capitalism red in tooth and claw.
